In Los Angeles a 100-year-old man backed his car on to a sidewalk and hit 11 people, including nine children.

The accident happened across the street from a South Los Angeles Elementary school.

As Carter was backing his Cadillac into a parking spot, the vehicle jumped the curb and plowed into the crowd, according to Richard French, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

“I’m sorry,” Preston Carter told CNN affiliate KTLA. “I lost control of the car. The brakes failed, I think.”

None of the victims were said to have life threatening injuries. Four of the children were in critical condition when firefighters arrived but they were stabilized and were in serious condition at a hospital, city fire Capt Jaime Moore said.
