American swimmer Ryan Lochte has surpassed Michael Phelps as the man to beat in the world of American male swimming. The Beijing 2008 Olympic icon Michael Phelps has struggled to make his presence felt.

But both of these guys may have met their match and even more – 16-year-old Chinese female swimming prodigy Ye Shiwen smashed the world record and left her competitors far behind. In her gold medal 400m race she swam a stretch of the 50m in just 28.93 seconds.

American Male Swimmer Ryan Lochte who also won gold in the 400m swam his fastest 50m in 29.10 seconds.

The 16 year old 5 foot 8 swimmer credits her success to her coaches.

She was able to out due American world champion Elizabeth Beisel to win the final in four minutes.  Ye who swam the 400m in 4:28.43 seconds broke the previous World Record 4:29.45 set by Australian Stephanie Rice in Beijing 4 years ago.
