President Jacob Zuma has declared that Nelson Mandela, the father of modern South Africa, has died.
He was 95 years old.
Mandela had been battling health issues for months, including a lung infection that led to numerous hospital visits.
“He is now resting. He is now at peace,” Zuma said. “Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father.”
Mandela emerged from 27 years of prison, to become his country’s first black president.
In 1993, Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize,”for their work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa.”
