Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson buys $17,352 worth of toys for kids in Houston at an annual event that the football star participates in every year.
Johnson, 32, was drafted by the Houston Texans back in 2003 and has had a successful career with them since. While he may be one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, the football star has a soft spot for charities as he reportedly bought over $17,000 worth of toys for local Houston children.
After his first year playing professional football, Andre Johnson founded the Andre Johnson Foundation for children and teens. The foundation has a specific focus on children who grow up in single-parent homes.
With the help from his charity, Andre Johnson buys $17,352 worth of toys as he left children 8-16-years-old go on an all out shopping spree at Toys R’ Us. While Johnson held this event every year since the start of his charity, it did not receive world wide attention until 2012 when Johnson spent over $19,000 and was photographed holding up lengthy receipts.
The children who have the opportunity to participate are in the Child Protective Services program. Johnson hopes that this event and publicity will bring more attention and awareness to issues that orphaned children, or children with only one parent, suffer from.
