Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade was allegedly strip searched by United States authorities after her arrest on visa charges in New York City.
Despite her assertions of immunity, Devyani Khobragade was reportedly strip searched, cavity searched and DNA swabbed after her arrest outside of her daughter’s school in Manhattan. Authorities arrested India’s deputy consul general on charges that she lied on a visa application about how much she paid her housekeeper. The prosecutor states that Khobragade added $3 more than what the maid was actually paid.
Upon her arrest by U.S. marshals, Devyani Khobragade was strip searched in jail. Her arrest and reported treatment by U.S. officials ignited a series of rage protests in India as they are outraged by the American authorities’ actions.
Published throughout Indian media, Khobragade wrote to the press and stated:
“I broke down many times as the indignities of repeated handcuffing, stripping and cavity searches, swabbing, in a holdup with common criminals and drug addicts were all being imposed upon me despite my incessant assertions of immunity.”
India has made it a priority to try and return Devyani Khobragade to her home country as soon as possible. One anonymous Indian official told reporters,
“India’s top demand right now is: Return our diplomat.”
According to the prosecution, Khobragade arrest is justified as the Indian official claims to have paid her maid $4,500 a month when in actuality paid her $3 less an hour. Khobragade firmly denies the accusations and has pleaded not guilty to the charges. She also plans to challenge her arrest on the grounds of diplomatic immunity.
Khobragade is currently out on a $250,000 bail and has to check in with the New York Police Department once a week until her hearing.
