A 19-year old man killed by police in the Los Angeles-area, after setting fire to his girlfriends apartment with his 2-year-old son inside and then burning down his mothers house. Police officers shot and killed Asa James Dolak on a baseball field after a short pursuit on foot around 1:30 p.m. PT Thursday. Dolak was armed with a knife and acting hostile towards the officers giving chase.
Torrance police officers had been looking for Dolak all morning, before finding him hiding in the girls bathroom Madrona Middle School. Dolak was acting aggressively towards the officers with a knife he was carrying.
“19-Year-Old Man Burns Girlfriends Apt. With Son Inside and His Mothers Home”
The 19-year-old man had been hiding out since setting fire to his girlfriends apartment with their young son inside and then torching his mothers home nearby. Dolak’s mother Andrea, told the Daily Breeze that her son called her saying, “Your house is next.” A few hours after that phone call her home was a blazing inferno.
The young boy was rescued from the flames by firefighters and treated for smoke inhalation; Dolak’s mother was not hurt from the fire at her home.
A resident who lives close to the middle school where the shooting occurred, reported to the Daily Breeze that they heard six to eight gunshots fired. Police Sgt. Robert Watt told reporters, “I don’t know what happened on the confrontation between officers and Mr. Dolak, but apparently it turned into deadly force.” Dolak was angry with his family and wanted to kill them, Watt said.
Earlier in the month Dolak’s girlfriend and mother had gotten court ordered restraining orders approved to keep the 19-year-old away from them. Dolak and his girlfriend had been separated for some time when the incident occurred. His mother Andrea complained to police that nothing was being done after she called 911 two nights in a row on her son, when he had previously threatened to burn down her house.
