New Years Eve Honoree Justice Sonia SotomayorAfter Justice Sotomayor pushes the button, the famed ball will begin to drop and the 60-second countdown to the new year will begin. Massive crowds huddled together in Times Square will chant out the time, and celebrate when the ball finally touches down, signalling 2014 has arrived. New Year’s Eve in Times Square is heralded as the largest New Year’s Eve celebration in the world.

This year’s ball is decorated with thousands of crystals and an estimated 32,000 lights. The dazzling event is looked forward to by many who travel from all over the world to take part in this long-standing tradition. Many begin the new year with a New Year’s kiss, and others simply cheer and celebrate. It is customary for plenty of confetti, glitter, noise makers, and other effects to go crazy all over Times Square to mark the occasion.

An estimated 1 million people pack into the festive Times Square for the New Year’s Eve celebration. Musical performances throughout the night keep party-goers entertained, and this year has quite the popular lineup. Miley Cyrus will headline the music stage, along with acts such as Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Blondie, Melissa Ethridge, and more. Many are probably more interested in what Miley Cyrus is going to do this New Years, rather than caring about the Supreme Court Justice pushing the button.

Fans will also be entertained with video productions throughout the night, one of them being a video presentation marking the history of the New Year’s Eve tradition in Times Square. Festivities officially kick off at 6pm on December 31, 2013, and this year it will literally be kicked off with an opening kung fu performance on stage at 6pm.
