Dennis Rodman has checked into rehab according to sources close to the former basketball star. Rodman has been back in the spotlight after a negative press spiral over his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un.
The 52-year-old basketball player was said to have gone on a drinking binge after his trip to North Korea. Rodman’s agent, Darren Prince, wrote in a statement that the former Chicago Bull’s star was in a state of emotional turmoil:
“Dennis Rodman came back from North Korea in pretty rough shape emotionally. The pressure that was put on him to be a combination ‘super human’ political figure and ‘fixer’ got the better of him. He is embarrassed, saddened and remorseful for the anger and hurt his words have caused. His drinking escalated to a level that none of us had seen before…Dennis is proud to be an American citizen and his trips to North Korea have been paid by sponsors.”
Sources close to Rodman told reporters that he checked into rehab on Wednesday and that he is currently recovering at a center in New Jersey. It is believed that his alcoholism played a part with his negative press as he was said to be under the influence when he told reporters that it may be Kenneth Bae’s fault for being trapped in North Korea. Bae, who was acting as an ambassador for the United States and North Korea, is currently serving a 15-year sentence in the region.
Dennis Rodman was initially under heavy scrutiny for singing Happy Birthday to North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un during his visit with other former NBA stars. While now apologetic, Rodman was seemingly undeterred by the press upon his return as he told reporters:
“I’m not the president. I’m not an ambassador. I’m Dennis Rodman. I’m sorry for what’s going on in North Korea, the certain situations.”
