Apple’s Siri helped to revolutionize the cell phone industry back in 2011 and now Microsoft is looking to give Siri some competition with Cortana.
Microsoft’s Cortana will be similar in design to that of Siri in that it will be a highly advanced voice recognition based personal assistant and navigator. But how will it really stack up against Siri?
“Our UI will be deeply personalized, based on the advanced, almost magical, intelligence in our cloud that learns more and more over time about people and the world,” said Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO.
Details are somewhat scarce at the moment, but for those that recognized the name Cortana, it comes from the popular video game franchise Halo, and Jen Taylor who originally voiced the character will be reprising her role for Microsoft’s Cortana as well.
Cortana will be launching in April for Windows based cell phones, but its what Microsoft has planned beyond that which may put it far above Siri. Microsoft will also be incorporating Cortana into their Xbox and Windows platforms in the coming years. This means that the Cortana experience could be potentially streamlined for users from their desktops, tablets, phone and gaming console.
Microsofts Bing Translator app can give people a small look at what is soon to come. The app will begin to feature bits and pieces of what is on the way with Cortana.
Until more details become available and beta testing begins, it is hard to tell whether or not Cortana can truly compete with Siri, but it seems as tough Microsoft is taking a big step in the right direction.
