MAVERICKS SURF CONTEST IS ON
The water temp is 45 degrees and the swell off the coast of California is expected to bless Half Moon Bay, the infamous Mavericks surf break with 40 foot faces! This means the Mavericks Surf Contest Is On, officially.
The Almighty Mavericks Surf ContestThe Body Glove Mavericks Invitational (which is presented by GoPro) is not an event that can be calculatingly planned out in advance, surfers from around the world are on call, and it was just announced that despite being cancelled earlier, Mavericks is on officially for Friday January 24th starting at a chilly 8am in Pillar Point or Santa Cruz.
Due to the particularly dangerous positioning of the break, the constantly changing conditions, and safety first, the Mavericks Surf Contest has surfers and even plain ocean fanatics on the edge of their seats. This year, for the first time ever, the contest will air LIVE on national television on Universal Sports Network, it will also be streaming live on the web at mavericksurfinvitational.com and universalsports.com.
Back in February of 2010 at the Mavericks Surf Contest, several spectators were seriously injured after what was called a “rogue wave” slammed the rocks. This incident (and environmental concerns) have changed the way the contest is held. Now spectators must attend the “Maverick Viewing Festival” from a neighboring resort, where they can watch the action on big HD screens, live music, and access to the awards ceremony at the end.
If you ever wanted to get an idea of what its like close up at Mavericks without risking your life, this video on YouTube from Network_A is a decent example of just how heavy this wave really is.
