New reports say that a passenger on board a Pegasus Airline flight demanded the flight be rerouted to Sochi, Russia, where the Olympic Winter Games are being held, after announcing he had a bomb with him on the plane. The flight had 110 passengers flying from Kharkov, Ukraine before the hijacker announced his plans and for the plane to change course.
The pilots announced to control of the situation and that they were redirecting to Sochi but turned off the in-flight tracking and flew the plane and hijacker to Istanbul, Turkey were they were escorted by two Turkish F-16s upon entering Turkey airspace.
The plane landed safely at Istanbul Airport to awaiting police, who searched the plane for the suspected hijacker, in which U.S. Officials have announced that the Turkish police do have a suspect in custody though the plane and it’s passengers are still being held in a secure part of the airport as they search for the explosive device.
As of yet, there has been no fatalities of the passengers and it is unclear if the hijacker was working alone, or this was one of many flights that could of been hijacked to disrupt the Winter Olympics set in Russia, like the planned hijackings of flights used in September 11, 2001 that left many dead.
