Friday afternoon a man carrying two large bags tried to jump the fence at the White House. Luckily officers of the US Park Police were able to tackle the man before he was able to jump over the fence on the North Lawn of the White House. The man’s bags were immediately searched by police, but nothing dangerous was found inside. The event triggered an entire lock-down of the pedestrian street in front of the White House for some time on Friday.
Fence Jumper Puts White House On Lock-Down
The unidentified man is in police custody and will be facing charges for attempting to breach the security at the White House. Nobody’s life was apparently in danger from the unarmed man, but a motive for jumping the fence has not been determined. Had the man jumped the fence successfully, a more grim fate may have met the would-be jumper. Security measures at and around the White House are taken seriously, and deadly force can be used to defend the property. A man carrying two large bags might have appeared to be carrying explosives to the eyes of those in charge of security, and allowing him to get across the White House lawn would be too great of a risk.
Thankfully in this situation nobody was harmed, and the man was apprehended without any further incident. The brave US Park Police could have been risking their lives had the man been carrying any explosives, but that is a risk that they are aware they are taking every day that they go to work.
No motive for why the man tried to jump the fence has been given, and without any weapons or explosives it would leave some to wonder if he was just hoping to stir up trouble, or if he was hoping to be shot and killed by the guards. There are some people who will knowingly cause trouble, hoping to be killed by police, and perhaps that is all that happened yesterday.
