Verizon is set to eliminate about 380 Verizon Wireless call center positions from their Hanover call center. The mass layoff is part of one of the nations largest wireless services, national restructuring in which five centers will close and 3,000 workers will be forced to look for new offices or apply for new company jobs, the wireless company told workers Wednesday.
The company’s customer service centers in Warrendale and Cranberry will be closed, along with three others in the United States. Verizon said its regional headquarters, which employs about 340, will remain open in Warrendale.
Verizon said they do not regard the closures as a cost-cutting measure because the company plans to fill all the openings created by the reorganization.
The closures are supposed to be completed by early May.
The 3,000 Verizon employees who must transfer or find new jobs work in: Alpharetta, Ga.; Cranberry Woods and Warrendale, Pa.; Hanover, Md.; Irvine, Calif.; and Meriden and Wallingford, Conn.
The Hanover call center will not close, but will become a call center for government agency and business customers as opposed to individual consumers. It will be staffed by 320 workers who will move there from a Verizon call center in Laurel, which will remain open for other functions, said Paul Macchia, a Verizon Wireless spokesman.
