Evgeni Plushenko had already contributed to the Russian team taking the team gold in the 2014 Olympic figure skating competition.  The skater had a previous back injury from 2013 and started to have pain during the team competition, but pushed through the pain.  He even decided to try to win an additional medal after winning the team competition.

The crowds were roaring as Evgeni Plushenko took the ice for warm-ups.  He went for a triple axel during warm-ups and by the look of his landing, things were not good.  He uncomfortably skated off to the side to talk to a referee while holding his lower back, obviously in pain.

His coach had to help him off the ice as his withdrawl from the competition was annonced.  He waived at the crowd and touched his heart before finally leaving the rink.

Evgeni Plushenko has previously won four Olympics medals, two gold and two silver at the 2002, 2006, 2010, and 2014 Olympics.  The Russian crowd is surely disappointed as their home country hero had to withdraw from a competition he had a very high chance of winning.  Will this be it for Evgeni Plushenko?  Or can his figure skating career be salvaged after another devastating back injury?
