A small private plane crashed into the mountainside near a ski resort in Colorado killing 3 people. The small single engine plane was headed to Cortez, Colorado before losing control and crashing into the cliffs.
The private plane took off from the Cortez airport carrying three passengers at 11:20 a.m. and authorities at the airport lost contact with the plane around 12:40 p.m. prompting them to send out a search party. The sheriff’s office and local police found the plane later that afternoon crashed into the mountainside about a mile west of the airport. Sheriff Bill Masters from San Miguel County reported that all three people were killed in the plane crash. “This is certainly not the outcome we were hoping for, it’s just a terrible, terrible tragedy,” Masters said.
What caused the plane to crash has not yet been determined, although at the time of take off there was light snow fall in the area causing moderate to low visibility and with light winds. The pilot of the private plane last made communication with airport officials before taking off and said that everything was fine.
The sheriff’s office has not yet released the names of the three people killed in the accident and plans to do so once the families of the victims have been contacted. The FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) and National Transportation Safety Board are still investigating the crash.
