A 500 pound bomb narrowly misses hitting U.S. soldiers. The soldiers were bunkered down and had been taking fire from enemy snipers periodically. The team spotted a group of Taliban soldiers moving across ridge and called in a friendly airstrike. The airstrike turned out to be not so friendly as the 500 pound bomb dropped mistakenly a little too close for comfort.
The soldiers inside the bunker never thought of the possibility of bomb hitting them. A few seconds before impact they heard the bomb come screaming in and it sounded really close. One of the soldiers said at that point I definitely knew that something was wrong.
The 60mm mortars team 1st Sergeant had called for a stand to, which turned out to save the lives of three soldiers. If the soldiers had stayed in the wooden building shrapnel from the bomb would have killed them. Luckily no casualties were suffered by the mistaken bomb dropping. The 500 pound bomb narrowly missed hitting the soldiers by only 15m behind them. The soldiers were obviously shaken up and angry after nearly getting a bomb dropped on them by mistake. It has not yet been determined why the bomb was so far off target.
