Marvel Phase 3: What We Know So Far

Marvel Studios is knee deep in phase 2 of their cinematic universe with Captain America: The Winter Soldier due out soon, the first Guardians of the Galaxy trailer recently having dropped and suspense building for Avengers: Age of Ultron next year, but many have already been speculating and wondering what they have in store next. So what do we know about Marvel phase 3?

To start, the only film that has actually been confirmed is Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man film, which recently found it’s stars in Paul Rudd and perhaps more surprisingly, Michael Douglass. However, some recent news has all but confirmed a film that has been long rumored by the studio. Recent reports indicate that Marvel has finally moved forward with a Doctor Strange movie, with a script in the works and casting rumors already flying about.

“Feige has pretty much confirmed Dr. Strange for some time now. They really wanted it to be a part of Phase 2 at one point, but like Ant-Man that just didn’t happen. That’s probably the one that Feige is personally rooting for the most and as a result it is the solo film that is the highest priority other than the sequels,” said Victor Jones in an interview with Schmoes Know.

Names that have been thrown around in casting for the part of Stephen Strange include Johnny Depp, Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen and even George Clooney has come up, but nothing is confirmed. As far as directors it is known that Marvel has met with Mark Andrews, Jonathan Levine, Nokolaj Arcel and Dean Isrealitte.

Another title that has got some more buzz floating around is a Black Widow solo film. Marvel has yet to produce a film that centers totally around a female hero and Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, recently stated that a Black Widow movie is in development, but there was no timeline indicated.

“Widow’s part in [Age of Ultron] is very big. We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film. The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that,” Feige said in an interview with Variety.

Also, it looks like a lot of Marvel phase 3 will center around wrapping up trilogies. Captain America has already had a third installment green lit as well as Thor, after the successful box office run of Thor: The Dark World last year. And of course, The Avengers 3 will also be included in that bunch as well and will likely be the center piece of the much teased Thanos plot line, stemming from the post credit scene at the end of The Avengers.

Beyond that it is not known whether or not Black Panther will get his first shot at the big screen or if Tony Stark will return for Iron Man 4 but it looks like no matter what, Marvel’s plate is full.
