At the 2013 Boston Marathon, a few hours after the winners crossed the finish line, two bombs went off near the finish line.  5 deaths and 280 injuries were reported from the incident.

Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev were the two men that were responsible for the bombs that went off.  They carried them into the racing area via backpacks and left them in the crowd to go off.  It was an easy task for them due to the mass amount of people that were at the event.

Many that were unable to finish the 2013 Boston Marathon were granted entry into the 2014 Boston Marathon.  So the Boston Athletic Association, who runs the Boston Marathon, is taking measures to ensure that runners and spectators will feel safe attending the event.

Nothing larger than a fanny pack will be allowed in the racing area.  Runners will be given clear bags that will be taken from the location they load the bus to the end of the race to allow them a change of clothes afterwards.  Otherwise, no bags will be allowed.  They are also restricted on the amount of liquid they can carry and the bagginess of their clothing.  Hopefully this will leave runners and spectators feeling safe to still attend the event in strong numbers.
