Da Brat pays Shayla Stevens $6.4 million after a jury awarded the former NFL cheerleader damages following the attack. Da Brat, an Atlanta-based rapper, attacked Stevens with a bottle of rum.
The incident, which happened back in 2007, involves Shawntae Harris (Da Brat) who served three years in prison following the attack. Shayla Stevens also filed a civil lawsuit in 2009 seeking compensation for damages from the brutal attack. The Cobb County jury awarded Stevens $2.7 in punitive damages and an additional $3.7 million in compensatory damages.
The jury concluded that Da Brat was responsible for Stevens’ injuries. The incident took place at Studio 72 on Halloween. The attacks with the rum bottle reportedly left Shayla Stevens with severe mental pain, permanent facial scarring and neurological impairment.
While Da Brat and her lawyers are baffled by the amount they think is excessive, Stevens’ lawyer told reporters:
“She has a brain injury and is a brain injury survivor. It’s not something that will ever go away. She has a scar on her face. She had so much going for her and for it come to an abrupt stop because of this attack.”
It has not been confirmed at this time if Da Brat will appeal the jury’s decision. Neither Shayla Stevens or Shawntae Harris have spoken publicly about the matter.
