One of the most memorable moments of the 2014 Academy Awards was the celebrity packed selfie that was taken by host Ellen DeGeneres. The cell phone self-portrait featured the who’s who of the hottest celebrity stars – including the likes of Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Lawrence – and the photograph was an Internet sensation. Within minutes of DeGeneres posting the image on Twitter the photo went viral, with more than half a million re-tweets and 300,000 favorites.
DeGeneres made her way into the crowd during the Academy Awards with her cell phone in hand, recruiting the likes of Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Kevin Spacey, Lupita Nyong’o and her brother, among others to take a selfie with her.
Jared Leto was more than happy to jump into the picture, right off his win for best supporting actor for “Dallas Buyers Club”, making a last minute appearance in the photo, or as many would describe as a “photobomb”.
On Twitter, DeGeneres wrote,” If only Bradley’s arm was longer.”
After the image was posted on the popular social networking site, in the wake of what DeGeneres deemed as the “best photo ever,” which many couldn’t argue against with the star power that made their way into the image, the service was temporarily unavailable for several minutes after the photo was posted.
Ellen first went to Liza Minnelli for the selfie and then turned to Meryl Streep – the record holder for nominations, to break a Twitter record. When she went over to Meryl that is when all the commotion broke loose, encouraging everyone else to join in on the fun. Jared Leto came in last on the selfie, photobombing the photograph at the very last moment in his attempt to join the photo.
Chiwetel Ejiofor missed out on the photo as well, so he took a photo with Jared Leto after the fact. The “selfie” was definitely made a name for itself at this years Academy Awards.
