There is no hotter name in Hollywood than Marvel at the moment, but the recently announced Marvel Netflix series are going to come at a high price.
According to a recent report from Variety, Disney is planning on spending $200 million over the next three years to film the four Marvel shows, as well as The Defenders miniseries.
The four shows are going to be 13 episodes each centering around Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones. The shows will all be filming in New York starting with Daredevil later this year. Daredevil is also the only one of which has a show runner at the moment in Drew Goddard.
The fact that the shows are shooting in New York is beneficial for a couple of reasons. One is that all of the characters in the forthcoming shows are rooted in the Hells Kitchen neighborhood of the city. Secondly, Disney is receiving approximately $4 million in tax credits from New York State for shooting there.
Though the majority of the characters in the upcoming Marvel Netflix series are lesser known, it does line up with what the studio has announced so far with their plans for phase 3 of their cinematic universe. It was recently confirmed that the sorcerer supreme, Doctor Strange, is finally getting his own movie and he is a pivotal member of The Defenders. It is very likely that Marvel could include him in the miniseries as well as characters like Hawkeye and The Hulk who have also been members of the superhero team.
The studio has already established crossover between the cinematic and TV universes, with several characters having made appearances on the ABC series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Jaimie Alexander’s character Lady Sif, from the Thor films, will be making an appearance on the show next week.
When all is said and done, Disney will be spending more than $3 million dollars per episode on the Marvel Netflix series which will begin to debut sometime in 2015 starting with Daredevil.
