Cops have arrested a suspected gunman who killed three in an Ohio bar brawl that turned deadly which killed Elmore police officer Jose Andy Chavez and two other men early Sunday at a bar near Toledo. A fourth man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Officers with the state Bureau of Criminal Investigations were assisting Fremont police with the case Sunday.
Detectives were working on putting an identity to the shooter, who escaped after the mayhem that ensued at the Last Call Cantina in Fremont but have now made an arrest.
Police say they took 33 year-old Igmidio Mista into custody Monday morning shortly after they issued an arrest warrant for him. That warrant charges him with three counts of murder.
Police say they found Mista at a home in Fremont and arrested him without incident. It was not immediately made clear who his lawyer is.
Relatives of two of the victims told the media that the shooter punched one of the victim’s wives, which first caused the altercation to begin. He left the bar then returned with a gun where he opened fire and ultimately left three dead.
The victims of the deadly Ohio bar fight include Elmore police officer Jose Andy Chavez, 26; bartender Ramiro Sanchez, 28; and a customer Daniel Ramirez, 25.
“It is sad that an altercation in a bar went so terribly out of control. I am sad for all of the victims and their tragic deaths,” Police Chief Wiersma said. “All of the victims were from our community, and, yes, one being a fellow police officer makes it even harder.”
Chavez leaves behind a wife and two small children. He had been a police officer on the force for nearly two years. A fourth man was also shot at the bar, Ramiro Arreola, 25, and was flown to a hospital in critical condition.
