A Harlem explosion has left two people dead and dozens injured after two buildings in Manhattan suddenly collapsed on Wednesday.
Reports are indicating that two people have been killed after a massive explosion in East Harlem. Authorities are saying that at least 16 others are injured, four of which are said to be in critical condition.
The cause of the explosion is not clear at this time. Spokesman Bob McGee from Con Ed told reporters that they received a call about a gas leak a little after 9 a.m. After the utility sent out two trucks to take a look at the leak that arrived minutes after the explosion took place.
Firefighters are currently struggling to control the fire and were quick to try to remove the tenants from the blaze. One resident who goes by Angelica told CNN reporters:
“I heard a big explosion. I didn’t know what was going on. … My neighbors came banging on my door, telling me to get out. I guess they were evacuating the building. And I couldn’t get out. My door was jammed. Everything on my windowsill fell. I guess the impact of the explosion jammed the door as well. It was extremely loud. I couldn’t even explain it to you, if I could. It was just so loud. It woke me out of my sleep. That’s how loud it was.”
Rescue officials are still on the scene. An investigation is currently underway into the cause of the explosion. However, authorities cannot move forward with the investigation until firefighters put out the blaze completely and declare the area safe.
