The SXSW accident has taken the world by storm as a random driver rams into the crowd and kills two people.
The driver has not been named at this time, but has only been identified as a black male. Police state that the man plowed into the crowd while trying to avoid a sobriety checkpoint in Austin on Thursday.
Police state that the black male rammed into the crowd and killed two people while injuring 23 others. One of those killed in the accident was a woman from Texas and another was a Dutch man. Names of those killed have not been released at this time. The driver will be facing two counts of capitol murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault using his vehicle.
Speaking about the incident, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo stated in a press conference:
“This is an individual that showed no regard for the human beings that he plowed into in his attempt to get away.”
According to the police report, the individual in question was asked to pull over at a sobriety checkpoint. However, the driver instead sped away from police and drove through the police barricade. He continued to drive through people who were lined up outside a nightclub and plowed through crowds for two blocks.
After running over the victims, the black male tried to evade custody on foot but was brought down by an officer and his stun gun.
Of the injured, five victims are said to be in critical condition and five others are in serious condition.
