It is no secret that Americans love to eat and that is why there are an astonishing amount of American eating challenges around the country. Shows like Man Vs. Food and Diners, Drive-ins and Dives have helped to popularize these eating challenges and expose them to the masses. For better or for worse, people seek out these challenges and do their best to conquer them.
As mentioned, Americans love to eat. According to the CDC, more than one-third of American adults are obese. While many countries around the world struggle just to have enough food to go around, people in the U.S. consistently partake in excessive meals.
The human body can only process so many calories in one day and the general bench mark for nutrition is based on around 2,000 calories per day. The fact of the matter is, most of these eating challenges surpass that by a lot.
The thing is, there is a culture built around food. It isn’t just about getting essential calories for most people in the U.S. It is about experiencing flavor. It is about enjoying a variety of different types of food and tastes.
Aside from the taste, another major motivating factor is the idea of being able to conquer a challenge. These are clearly not easy to do, or everyone would and they wouldn’t be as special as they are. But to be one of the few that do manage to complete one of these challenges, it is surely a feeling one would like to know. And in some cases, people can still be the first to do so, and being the first to do anything is always an accomplishment, be it perhaps an excessive and unhealthy one.
