St. Patrick’s Day was a long day for the owner of the Colts, Jim Irsay. He got to spend most of the day in jail after being arrested earlier that morning.
Irsay had been arrested at around 3 AM Monday morning for driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance. he was later charged with four felony counts of drug possession after police found several different prescription medications in his car.
After spending what had to be a sobering–literally and metaphorically–day Irsay was released on bail after being charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated and four counts of felony possession of a controlled substance. As long as the day had to be for him he still took to Twitter to send the fans a message:
Deepest thx to family, friends, fans, colleagues for the messages of support, thoughts and prayers. Impossible to tell u how much this means — Jim Irsay (@JimIrsay) March 17, 2014
Throughout the day the media was flooded by countless stories of ‘sources’ talking about how their has been concern over Irsay’s behavior and prescription drug abuse for sometime. There were several claims that the organization had been trying to get him some help–at the least a driver–but for some reason all efforts were unsuccessful.
Irsay has admitted to having issues with pain killers in the past (back in 2002), but claims that he kicked the problem. His rather wild tweets and some of the pictures he’s posted on Twitter in the past have led to speculation of drinking; something he claims he has not done in over 15 years.
What will be interesting going forward will be how the NFL handles the situation on their end. While making sure that Irsay gets the help that he needs is the most important thing at some point there is bound to be some sort of punishment levied.
