Misty Shaffer had a big surprise waiting for her military husband as he stepped off the plane for his homecoming. She welcomed him home 100 pounds lighter than when he last saw her.

High school sweethearts, Misty and Larry Shaffer, were married in 2008. Misty had struggled with her weigh her whole life, even as a youngster, but Larry never once said a word to her about it per CNN.

In 2012, Larry, an Army specialist, was assigned to Afghanistan for his year-long deployment. At this time, Misty made the life-changing decision to get in shape.

Misty weighed approximately 260 pounds at the time. Upon her husband’s return, she weighed less than 155 pounds.

“I just sat in bed one night and was like, ‘I can do this,” she said. “I need to do this.”

So the journey commenced as the 25-year-old from Leland, North Carolina, began her incredible transformation.

In the past, Misty Shaffer had tried dieting, but each time she would suffer from relapse. Prior to becoming pregnant with her daughter, Nevaeh, Misty lost 60 pounds by taking diet pills. However, after stopping the pills, the weight came back ten-fold. Misty weighed in close to 300 pounds at her heaviest. Her height is 5 feet 6 inches tall.

“I would eat when I was bored. I’d eat three huge meals a day, and then snack in between. Sad or happy, I’d turn to food for everything.”

Her energy level was greatly affected, and she felt fatigued all the time.  People were on her about her weight. She wanted to surprise her husband, by making a change for the betterment of her life as well as her family’s.

She began by eliminating all junk, sticking to drinking only water and coffee and cutting out all the soda she had so frequently consumed.

Misty found the first three to four months to be the most challenging of the whole experience. After getting through that time period, healthy eating came naturally to her and became her way of life. Misty no longer craved the sodas, in fact, if she drank a diet soda, it made her so thirsty, that she didn’t want anything to do with it.

Since Misty is employed at a super market as a personnel shopper, she has to muster up a great deal of restraint. This proves to be quite the challenge, but her goals are set. At lunch time, the hot fried chicken “just smells so good” she said. Thankfully, the market offers a selected array of healthy food as well, including a fully loaded salad bar, along with oven-baked chicken and warm veggies on the hot bar.

Misty’s breakfast consists of oatmeal with added fruit or a cereal bar. She has learned portion control is her best friend. She will still occasionally indulge in sausage, eggs or pancakes but only in moderate servings.  Around mid-morning, she will allow herself a snack of either fruit or carrots.

Lunch usually includes a salad or a half a sandwich along with some type of veggie or fruit. She typically reaches for a yogurt as an afternoon snack.

As for dinner, some sort of protein in a lean meat form such as ground turkey or a boneless chicken, minus the skin, along with a smidge of starch and lots of vegetables.

The big reveal was May 15, 2013. She had managed to keep her slimming a secret surprise all the while her husband was away. After all, her husband had never seen her weigh less than 220 pounds, even in high school.

“I just kept pictures off Facebook, off the internet,” Misty said. “When I sent him pictures, they were from the shoulder up.”

She tried to think of how that magical moment would unfold, but in the end, as soon as she saw him at the airport, she just ran and jumped into his arms.

“Wow” was all her stunned and speechless husband Larry could manage to utter. The expression on his face said it all.

It was the first time he had ever picked her up. Before, he hadn’t been able to lift her off the ground even a little, Misty said.

That very moment meant the world to her and was worth everything.

“A lot of people look at it like, ‘Why is that such a big deal?’ she said. “But when you never thought you’d see that moment, that somebody can pick you up … it’s a big deal.”

She had one more surprise waiting for him upon his arrival and that was that she had purchased a new house while he was away.

Today, Misty Shaffer has successfully managed to keep the weight off.

Before Larry left for Afghanistan, Misty fluctuated between a size 22 to 24. Now she proudly fits into a size 6. She’s especially loving the positive effect buying smaller clothes has had on her budget, as she is able to save money on smaller clothes. Khakis that used to cost her $80 in her size, she can now find for $7 to fit her new frame.

As far as Larry, his eating habits haven’t changed much according to Misty. While he savors her cooking, he will still indulge in some ice cream or cake afterwards. Occasionally, she will join him, but nothing can tempt her to go back to her previous way of eating.

“I’ve seen how hard I worked, and what I had to go through to get to this point,” Misty said.

Today, when her husband picks her up, Misty is still in awe.
