2014 March Madness Upset: The Duke Blue Devils were looking to make some history in this season’s NCAA tournament–just not in the way that they did.
By losing to the Mercer Bears 78-71 the Duke Blue Devils take a seat in history with 17 other No. 3 seeds as the only ones to ever lose in the Round of 64 in Tournament history.
The Blue Devils were able to get out to a six-point lead in the first half after a lackluster start to the game, but the Bears would not go away. At the end of the half Duke had just a one-point lead, 35-34–and fans had every reason to be worried. Mercer could not miss a shot, but Duke had a lot of trouble finding the basket.
The trend continued in the second half when the Bears took an early 41-38 lead. For the remainder of the half the lead would go back and forth, but in the end Duke’s inability to make a shot (35.5 percent from the field) and Mercer’s inability to miss (55.6 percent from the field) cost the Blue Devils the game.
This marks the second time in three years Duke was eliminated in their opening game of the tournament.
Suffice it to say the Cinderella team of the tournament has been identified. Coincidentally, they come from the same conference as last year’s Cinderella team (Florida Gulf Coast University), the Atlantic Sun.
You can breathe now Mr. Buffett.
