Yosemite High School teacher, Gary Sconce, left for spring break a man, but will return to school after vacation a woman known as Karen Adell Scot.
The 56-year old husband and father has taught for 24 years as a science and multi-media instructor and reportedly told his family last April that she ‘felt like a female trapped in a male body’. She began hormone replacement therapy shortly after breaking the news.
Scot spoke out about her feelings of being trapped. “It’s like getting out of dark solitary confinement in prison where you never saw the light,” she said. “You can’t believe that you actually are free … People say its like a mental illness but it’s not … It’s being your authentic self after being a fake you.”
“I knew I was a girl from my first self-aware thoughts,” she said “and I tried desperately each morning to wake up each morning as a female small child and it never worked.”
A letter was sent out on March 19 to the parents of children at Yosemite Unified School District by Superintendent, James Sargent, informing them that from April 22 onward, Sconce would be know as Ms. Karen Adell Scot, the paper reported.
In the letter, reference is made to California Education Code 220, which states that no person shall be subjected to discrimination on the basis of gender, gender identity, gender expression or sexual orientation.
According to Scot, she will not be ‘pushing any social agenda’ on her students and will continue to ‘run a conservative and disciplined class.’
As for her name choice, Karen Adell, she chose the moniker as that was the name her mother would have given her had she been born female.
Scot sent out a letter to her fellow colleagues stating, ‘I have lost my marriage of 35 years to a magnificent, brilliant woman, am going to lose my house, and am spending money on serious and painful physical changes – including both medical and psychological services,’ the paper reported.
‘I have been shunned by those who used to be my friends, have been shunned by family, have had people try to cast demons out of me, have left my church of nearly 30 years, and have been scorned and laughed at by those who had for decades said they were my friends. Who would choose that?’
The school is doing its utmost to make the transition as smooth as possible, according to Yosemite High School Principal, Randy Seals, saying that inappropriate behavior will not be condoned.
Gary Sconce spent a lifetime desperately trying various activities to convince himself of his masculinity including college football, joining the military, becoming a sheriff’s deputy and teaching martial arts.
The Yosemite High School teacher has been the recipient of many awards and accolades over her vast teaching career including Who’s Who in America’s Schools teacher ten times as well as, Eastman Kodak Award for Excellence in Teaching, and a California Distinguished Educator Award. She has also received honors for excellence in teaching science and trained and coached California State Champions in Science Fair, Science Olympiad and Odyssey of the Mind.
