9-Year-Old’s Selfless Act of Compassion Viewed as Violation of School Dress Code Policy

A selfless act of kindness and solidarity by a 9-year-old girl was not received well by her Grand Junction, Colorado school.  Kamryn Renfro, shaved her head in honor of her friend who is suffering from childhood cancer. She was told by school officials at Caprock Academy that she could not return to class as she had violated the dress code policy.

With her parents consent, young Kamryn decided she wanted to shave off her blond braids to support of her close friend, Delaney Clements, who had lost all her hair to chemotherapy treatment.

“It felt like the right thing to do,” Kamryn told 9News.com.

Delaney’s mom, Wendy Campbell, expressed her shock at the school’s refusal to let Kamryn attend class because of the dress code.

“I didn’t realize that hair was such an important aspect of a child at school, Campbell said. “For a little girl to be really brave and want to shave her head in support of her friend, I thought that was a huge statement and it builds character in a child.”

President and Chair of the school’s Board of Directors, Catherine Norton Breman, said to 9News.com, “Caprock Academy does have a detailed dress code policy, which was created to promote safety, uniformity, and a non-distracting environment for the school’s students. Under this policy, shaved heads are not permitted.”

Young Delaney was touched and overjoyed by her friend’s show of support.

“It makes me sad because she was really happy to go back to school and show people what she did, but now that she didn’t get to, she’s kind of sad,” Deleaney told 9News.com.

The school board is set to convene Tuesday evening to discuss the situation and the policy. In the meantime, the headmaster at Caprock Academy has allowed Kamryn to return to school Tuesday.
