A woman who, as an infant, was found abandoned in the bathroom of a Pennsylvania fast food restaurant announced Tuesday that she had found her birth mother just three weeks after commencing a search that sparked world-wide attention.
Katheryn Deprill, now 27-years old, described meeting her biological mother for the first time as “pure joy”. The reunion took place Monday at an attorney’s office per ABC News.
“She is better than anything I could’ve ever imagined. She is so sweet and amazing. I’m so happy.” said Deprill, who is known internationally as the “Burger King Baby”.
The journey began for Deprill on March 2, when she posted on her Facebook page, a photo of herself holding up a sign that said, “Looking for my birth mother … She abandoned me in the Burger King bathroom only hours old, Allentown PA. Please help me find her by sharing my post.”
The photo sent off a Facebook frenzy as it was shared more than 30,000 times by users around the world and garnered the attention of many media outlets. Deprill’s enterprising plan worked, as the woman who abandoned her took notice and immediately contacted an attorney, John Waldron, who arranged their meeting.
Deprill would not disclose the woman’s name, however, she did say that she bears a very strong resemblance to her.
“It looked like I was looking in a mirror,” she said.
Deprill, an EMT, who lives just outside of Allentown in South Whitehall Township with her husband and three children, said she embraced her mother.
“I got the hug that I had wanted for the last 27 years, and that broke the ice,” she said. “I asked if I could have it, and she said, ‘absolutely,” and just held her arms open, and the rest is history.”
The meeting lasted about four hours as the pair got acquainted and exchanged contact information. Deprill said they plan to meet again.
“We are definitely going to have a relationship,” she said.
Deprill refused to comment on the circumstances of her abandonment and chose to refer those questions to Waldron.
The attorney stated that according to the woman, as a 16-year-old, she was raped while traveling abroad and became pregnant. The woman said she hid the pregnancy from her parents and, after giving birth in her bedroom, felt she could not take her newborn to the hospital because she would be required to answer questions.
Waldron and his staff made special arrangements for the meeting by filling the room with flowers, chocolates and boxes of tissue in honor of the reunion.
“It was one of the most emotional, joyful, dramatic, exciting things I’ve ever seen,” Waldron said, adding there’s no doubt in his mind that his client is Deprill’s mother.
“If you sat there for five minutes and heard them and watched them and observed them and looked at them, you would know,” he said.
Coincidentally, the woman had plans to launch a search of her own about six months ago for the daughter she had given up.
Deprill said, her mother expressed anguish and regret during their emotional meeting. Her response? She forgave her “110 percent, absolutely.”
