Amazon Web Services Receives Security Authorization With Department of DefenseThe new security clearance will allow Amazon to take on more projects that do not need to be hosted at Department of Defense internal data centers.  Amazon already contracts with several Departments of Defense, but this would allow for them to work with any department.

Amazon Web Services has been authorized to operate under a government-wide general security standard, FedRAMP, since May of 2013. The Department of Defense’s cloud security standards are more strict, so that’s why these clearances have taken longer.  The new clearance could mean more than just new Department of Defense business for Amazon Web Services.  Some commercial customers also want the FedRAMP package because of the criteria it has, so Amazon Web Services will also be able to get commercial business through the new security clearance.  Commercial customers will not have to make a new deal to contract by getting the FedRAMP package.
