Shocking video footage of a blonde woman being attacked and verbally abused in broad daylight on campus at Cairo University.
The unnamed woman was walking across the courtyard on campus wearing a pink shirt and a pair of black jeans, a large group male students followed her yelling obscene gestures and tried to rip her shirt off.
Cairo University dean Gaber Nassar, referred to woman’s outfit as unconventional. The dean went on to add that just because the woman was dressed out of the ordinary, it does not justify the male students attacking her.
The large group of male students verbally abused the blonde woman and tried to tear her pink shirt off, while making whistling noises and jeering as they chased after her.
Some of the male student are reportedly law students at Cairo University.
Dean Nassar told Egyptian television network ONTV, that woman’s clothing attributed to the incident. “This girl entered the university wearing an abaya (loose cloak) and then took it off in the faculty, and appeared with those clothes, that caused, in reality… the incident,” he said. “The student’s mistake does not justify what the male students did.”
The deans remarks about the situation sparked even more of an outrage and he later went on Twitter saying, his remarks about the incident were taken out of context and misunderstood and that the students involved in the attack would be severely punished.
Cairo University’s female students typically wear jeans and tops and refrain from wearing revealing clothes, and many of the female students wear the traditional Islamic headscarves, as do the majority of Egypt’s women.
A recent study reported that more than 99 percent of women in Egypt have been victims of some type of harassment in the past year.
Cairo University is located in Giza, Egypt and has been around for more than a 100 years.
