A new experimental drug may be helpful in tackling resistant lung cancer, a new study found.

Lung cancer patients who may have developed resistance to crizotinib, the commonly used drug, may now experience benefits after using a new experimental drug developed by a team of researchers.

While crizotinib, which is commonly marketed under the brand name Xalkori, is effective in dealing with lung cancer, a good number of patients have reported resistance to the same – and that’s where ceritinib, the new experimental drug comes in.

“Ceritinib is even effective after the first-generation drug crizotinib has stopped working,” Dr Alice Shaw, lead researcher at Harvard Medical School, Boston, explained.

Advanced ALK-positive non-small cell lung cancer, which is basically the resistant form of lung cancer, affects around 40,000 individuals around the world every year, which is quite concerning. Thankfully, ceritinib may be helpful in tackling lung cancer among these patients who may or may not have received treatment using the crizotinib drug.

What’s more, the researchers have also found how treatment using both the drugs- crizotinib and ceritinib, could be much more effective than using any of these drugs alone.”Ceritinib can overcome resistance to crizotinib, but no drug has so far been developed that can overcome resistance to ceritinib. The most likely sequence of therapy is crizotinib first, followed by ceritinib,” Dr Roman Thomas, department of translational genomics at the University of Cologne, added.

The findings from the study are now published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
