Obesity Surgery May Tackle Diabetes

Obesity Surgery Could be Effective in Dealing Against Diabetes

Bariatric surgery, an invasive procedure prescribed to those suffering from morbid obesity, could actually help diabetic patients handle their condition better. A team of researchers at the University of Cleveland, in their new study, have found how obesity surgery could help patients suffering from uncontrollable type 2 diabetes.

Following around 150 patients for a period of three years, the researchers attempted to assess individuals who went under the knife for an obesity surgery, and checked how they managed to maintain their blood sugar levels.”At three years, the therapeutic gap — the difference between blood sugar in the surgical group and the medical group — got even larger in favor of surgery” co-author of the study, Philip Schauer, a surgeon and director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, explained.

While the researchers are yet to understand exactly why this invasive procedure is so effective, they did notice immediate improvements, and patients who required insulin before the surgery didn’t require it a day or two after the procedure was completed- a shocking discovery that may shake the very foundations of the diabetes treatment.

“If you can cure diabetes by an operation like this and maintain that cure rate, then it’s a good investment” Noel Williams, head of the Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, added.

The results from this study are now published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
