LGPA stars are furious at the Paulina Gretzky Golf Digest cover as they feel the alluring pose blatantly disrespects women golf players.
Former NHL player Wayne Gratzky’s daughter Paulina graced the cover of Golf Digest due to her engagement with PGA Tour pro Dustin Johnson. While male golfers may find the cover appealing, Gretzky received a huge backlash from her fellow women athletes for the cover. Pro golfer Stacy Lewis commented about the cover to reporters and stated:
“It’s frustrating for female golfers. It’s the state of where we’ve always been. We don’t get the respect for being the golfers we are. Obviously, Golf Digest is trying to sell magazines, but at the same time you like to see a little respect for the women’s game.”
According to many women athletes, Golf Digest should be more focused on celebrating women golfers and not harness a “Sports Illustrated” approach to selling magazines that demeans women. However, Golf Digest defended their Paulina Gretzky Golf Digest cover and stated that while she is not an avid golfer herself, she “ranks at the high end of the golf celebrity scene today, and she has a compelling story to tell. She also might get some new people interested in the game.”
However, Angela Stanford says that the magazine needs to redirect who they are selling to:
“The question is who are they trying to sell to?” Stanford said. “If the answer is men 25 years old through 45 years old, then I guess that’s what they have to do. You know the old saying, sex sells. And nobody can argue with that. It’s just the way it is. But the LPGA has some attractive women and very fit women, so why not use them? I’m just baffled by it.”
Meanwhile, Paulina Gretzky has not commented on the backlash she received for the photo.
