Exposure to Morning Light may Help Promote Weight Loss

A team of researchers, in their new study published in the journal PLOS ONE, attempted to find out how exposure to morning light could be helpful in promoting weight loss.

According to the results from the study, which took into consideration some 54 volunteers, individuals who soaked up in the sun in the beginning of the day had a much lower body mass index, irrespective of how many calories they consumed.

Researchers speculate that this unique link between exposure to morning light and low BMI levels may have something to do with the fact that the circardian rhythms of the body, which are responsible for the optimum regulation of the body’s metabolism, gets activated on exposure to morning light, which in turn, regulates the appetite and promotes weight loss.

The researchers also attempted to explain the idea behind why morning light in particular, plays an important role in regulating the BMI. “Blue light has been shown to have the strongest effect on the circadian system,” the study authors said, explaining how morning light contains more wavelengths in the blue portion of the spectrum.
