Pfizer’s Breast Cancer Drug Shows Impressive Results

Pfizer’s New Drug Exceptionally Effective for Breast Cancer Patients

Breast cancer patients can now get nearly double the time to survive before their cancer gets worse thanks to Pfizer’s new experimental drug that has demonstrated ‘exceptional’ results. While the overall survival of the patients is yet to be understood better, the researchers noted a near doubling of the span of life among breast cancer patients who took the drug.

Women with breast cancer who were being treated with the hormone drug letrozole along with Pfizer‘s new drug palbociclib were found to live for around 10.2 months longer before their cancer progressed, as opposed to patients who were given letrozole alone, the researchers explained.

An overall survival rate of 37.5 percent was noted among patients who opted for the combination treatment, the researchers added. “The curves are starting to separate … It hasn’t reached statistical significance, but patients are still being followed,” lead author of the study, Dr. Richard Finn, associate professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, explained.

Currently, Palbociclib is being viewed at the drug that could eventually claim annual sales of $5 billion if approved by the regulators. While the new experimental drug seemed to be extremely impressive in terms of functionality, it did carry a few side effects like fatigue and low blood cell count, both of which were manageable.

“This is garden variety breast cancer,” Dr Judy Garber, a breast cancer specialist at Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and AACR representative, added. “When it recurs, all we really have are other hormonal agents … This is the first new drug to really show promise.”

This new experimental drug by Pfizer targets cell division which could be helpful for both locally advanced and newly diagnosed breast cancer cells that may have spread to other areas of the body.
