Arrest warrant issued for Robert Corchado in deadly KinderCare crash
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Robert Corchado, 28, is the driver of this Dodge Durango linked to a hit-and-run crash in Winter Park that sent another car crashing into a KinderCare, killing a young girl and injuring 14 other people.
An arrest warrant has been issued for the man Florida Highway Patrol troopers said caused a crash, sending a car into a Winter Park day care center.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers are looking for 28-year-old Robert Corchado.
Around 3 p.m. Wednesday, troopers said Corchado failed to slow down for a Toyota Solara, which slowed to make a turn into the KinderCare Learning Center, located at 4035 N. Goldenrod Rd.
The car crashed into the learning center, while Corchado fled in a silver Dodge Durango. The SUV was later found at a Winter Park home. The residents inside said one of their friends dropped the car off and left.
Eight children were taken to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. Troopers said 4-year-old Lily Quintus was pronounced dead a few hours later at the hospital.
As of 6:30 a.m. Thursday, troopers said one child remains in critical condition, three are serious and one is in fair condition. Two children have been discharged, including 5-year-old Xavier Valez. He was pinned between a table and wall.
A total of 12 people were hospitalized at area hospitals, according to Orange County Fire Rescue. Two others were treated at the scene.
Corchado is wanted for leaving the scene of an accident involving death and serious bodily injuries.
Troopers confirm Corchado then rented a black Mazda SUV from Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Winter Park with Florida tag CHR Q41. If you see him, do not approach him. Call 911 or FHP at (407) 737-2200.
KinderCare is a franchise day care center that offers day care programs for children as young as six weeks old, and before and after school programs for children between five and 12 years old.
In a statement Wednesday, the facility said:
“We are heartbroken that several of the children in our care and an adult were injured in an accident today. We are pulling for those who have been injured to quickly recover from this tragic accident.”
Contractors have been working through the early morning hours, making repairs to building.
Corchado has criminal record
Florida Highway Patrol initially said Corchado was looking to get a flight out of the area, and law enforcement officials handed out fliers at Orlando International Airport.
Corchado has been in trouble with the law before. According to the Florida Department of Corrections, he spent a year and 10 months in prison for extortion back in 2005. He also served three years in prison in 2010 for trafficking cocaine.
Corchado is about five feet, seven inches tall, weighing 172 pounds. He has tattoos on his back, left arm, right arm and left leg. Again, do not approach him if you see him. Call 911 instead.
Parents are asked to call (407) 522-2252 and follow the prompts to speak with a child care referral specialist.
The facility is located at 1940 Traylor Blvd. in Orlando.
