Could Low Blood Sugar Really Cause Marital Conflict?

A recent study shows that hunger and low blood sugar can be the cause of an increase in unhappiness between husbands and wives.  Serious discussions should not take place when hungry.

The National Academy of Sciences found that when blood sugars are the lowest, typically when hungry, dieting, or after missing a meal, conflict is more likely to arise during serious conversations.

Sugar fuels the brain, which regulates self control.  When the brain is low on sugar, it is low on fuel and more likely to be unable to control things such as emotions.  It is the first time that blood sugar has been tested to look for an association with marital conflict.

107 couples were studied and their blood sugars looked at before bed and in the morning.  They were also given a voodoo doll with pins they could stick in based on how angry they were with their partner.  After 21 days, they went into a lab and were told they were going to be in competition with their spouse.  They were both trying to push a button and the winner got to blast a loud noise at the loser.  The study found that those with the lowest evening time blood sugars blasted the noise longer and louder at their partner.

Because low blood sugar tends to cause emotions to be triggered that can be angry or aggressive, important conversations should not take place on an empty stomach, when dieting or hungry.  Serious conversations should take place after dinner, when blood sugar are least likely to be low and mood is more likely to be calm, balanced, and under control.
