Forecasters predict that more severe weather is headed towards parts of the central and southern U.S., after the tornado killed at least 16 in Arkansas and one in Oklahoma.  The Mississippi Valley and South remain under a severe weather watch until late Monday evening and early Tuesday morning.

The deadly tornado left an 80 mile path of destruction in its wake after ripping through Little Rock, Ark., emergency officials are still searching through the rubble in hopes of finding survivors. The National Weather Service says, that the tornado is by far the strongest one that has been recorded this year.

It has the potential to be EF3 or greater,” said meteorologist Jeff Hood. EF3 storms have winds greater than 136 mph. “Based on some of the footage we’ve seen from Mayflower and where it crossed Interstate 40, things were wrecked in a very significant way.”

The twister came down Interstate 40 destroying cars and trucks in its path, then picked up speed and tore through the suburbs about 10 miles outside of Little Rock. Another twister touched down in Quapaw, Okla., and killed one person, before moving north into Kansas and destroying 60 to 70 homes and injuring 25 people in the city of Baxter Springs, according to authorities in Kansas. A suspected tornado struck near Plain Dealing in northwest Louisiana.

Emergency rescue officials are still searching the debris in hopes of finding any survivors and trying to make sure that everyone is accounted for.
