It may be rainy in Oregon but when it comes to safety, it certainly isn’t lacking, especially in Portland, Oregon. With a lower than average violent crime rate and few sex offenders per capita, Portland made number three on our list for safest cities for families to live in in the United States. Along with being safe it is also dubbed as of the most peaceful states on Parenting’s list for the Institute for Economics & Peace index.
Portland is a city located in the U.S. state of Oregon, near the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers. As of the 2010 Census, it had a population of 583,776, estimated to have reached 587,865 in 2012, making it the 28th most populous city in the United States. Portland is Oregon’s most populous city, and the third most populous city in the Pacific Northwest region, after Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia. Approximately 2,289,800 people live in the Portland metropolitan area (MSA), the 19th most populous MSA in the United States per Wikipedia.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Report in 2009, Portland ranked 53rd in violent crime out of the top 75 U.S. cities with a population greater than 250,000. The murder rate in Portland from 2005 to 2009 averaged 3.9 murders per 100,000 people per year, which was lower than the national average. For crimes other than murder, Portland is generally somewhat higher than the national average. According to the Portland Police, Killingsworth St., 82nd Ave., and the St. Johns Woods Apartments are the most dangerous areas of the city. In October 2009, Forbes magazine rated Portland as the third safest city in America per Wikipedia.
