Why Am I Always Late? – ‘The Why’

Welcome to the latest edition of The Why.
Everywhere you look the media is pushing you telling you who to follow, what to watch and when to watch it.   You’re even sometimes told how to do it all.  Truth is, here at American Live Wire we do a bit of that too.  The big difference is we also tell you why.

You ask the questions.  We provide the answers.

Why am I always late?” you ask? Good question. While experts may not all agree on everything about our inability to always be on time there were a few points on which they all agreed.

Why am I always late?

We’re bad at predictions: Most of us don’t have a “900” number business where people pay us per minute to hear us tell them how their future will go. (If you don’t understand the “900” number reference then Google, kiddies.)

Seriously who can predict the future? Even when we try we are all a bit too optimistic in terms of estimating our travel time. (Your rovin’ reporter always allows extra time for some dipstick driver doing something stupid and even a few minutes for missing a turn and yet time still flies a bit too fast.)

Why am I always late?

Our brains favor rounding: Our brains reportedly are efficient because they are “lazy”. Remembering that you need to leave 35 minutes prior to the staff meeting is a little difficult. Your brain wants to make things easy so it optimistically rounds down to half an hour. Thus even if everyone driving in front of you didn’t get his/her license from a Crackerjack box (Google if you must) you will still be 5 minutes late.

We often underestimate: We often underestimate some if not all the time involved in getting anywhere. We don’t really think about how long it will really take to deal with real traffic, finding parking and even getting to and from the car. Even when we use Bing or Yahoo Maps and get details about driving time with traffic we find ourselves victims of what one online source called “the illusory superiority trap” where we are convinced we can get there on time if not sooner simply based on the “fact” that we are better, faster drivers than everyone else out there.

Why am I always late?

Doing the math can get monotonous: It can quickly get monotonous to have to repeatedly do the math in your head for every single sales appointment, tea meeting or planning session. Most folks simply hate such tedious tasks.

Why am I always late? Now you know.

You ask the questions.  We provide the answers.
