The upcoming Whitney Houston biopic will star up and coming actress, Yaya DaCosta. The Lifetime original film will be Angela Bassett’s directorial debut.
The film, which is set to debut in 2015 will chronicle the late singer’s early music career and her very public relationship with Bobby Brown. Bassett, who worked alongside Houston in the classic 1995 film, ‘Waiting to Exhale’ gave a brief statement regarding her role behind the scenes.
“I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby’s amazing talents and accomplishments; and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story,” said Bassett. “Their humanity and bond fascinates us all. I’m beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world.”

DaCosta, 31, made a name for herself as a part of the America’s Next Top Model reality show in cycle three. She has since appeared in a few television shows including; Ugly Betty, All My Children and House. She has even shared the screen with Justin Timberlake with a small role in the film In Time, and most recently she had a role in Lee Daniel’s The Butler. Other films include Take the Lead, Tron: Legacy and The Kids Are Alright.
The casting for the film may come as a shock to some who have made predictions between several Hollywood starlets. Songstress Brandy Norwood and Rihanna have both voiced their interest in portraying Houston on screen following her 2012 passing. Other names tossed around included Jennifer Hudson and Meagan Good.
The film is currently titled ‘Whitney Houston’ and further casting has yet to be announced. Yaya DaCosta has yet to give an official statement regarding the big news.
