Why Isn’t There A Speed Of Dark? – ‘The Why’

Welcome to the latest edition of The Why.

Everywhere you look the media is pushing you telling you who to follow, what to watch and when to watch it.   You’re even sometimes told how to do it all.  Truth is, here at American Live Wire we do a bit of that too.  The big difference is we also tell you why.

You ask the questions.  We provide the answers.

“Why isn’t there a speed of dark?” you ask? This is yet another one of those observational humor questions meant to elicit a laugh. It’s a play on words and the phrase “the speed of light.” If there’s a “speed of light” why isn’t there a speed of dark? All joking aside though, there is actually a common sense answer.

Why isn’t there a speed of dark? Some online sources take the easy way out and say darkness is the absence of light. You cannot measure something that is not there. Hence, no speed of dark.

There are, however, better answers to the question: Why isn’t there a speed of dark?  Let’s look at the oddball answers first.  According to the internet, there is a Speed of Darkness. It’s the fifth studio album by the Celtic punk band Flogging Molly and was released in 2011.

Why isn’t there a speed of dark?  According to the Discworld book series by Terry Pratchett, there is a speed of dark. In this case, darkness is faster than the speed of light because no matter how fast light tries to get there, darkness is always there first.

Why isn’t there a speed of dark? To shed some light on this question we must further discuss the speed of light. If you were to personally calculate the speed of light you would have to stand in the dark somewhere and wait for the light to reach you. The light has to come from somewhere so the light has an origin. Additionally, light can be captured and measured whereas darkness cannot.

Other sources pose that darkness “arrives” when light leaves. Therefore, the speed that light “leaves” a given space would also be the speed of darkness. Thus the speed of darkness would be the same as the speed of light, approximately “3.00 × 108 m/s,” for you math fans.

Of course, if you’re a true math fan you might believe the same as “Romiscious” who posted a very interesting response to the question: Why isn’t there a speed of dark? He said that there is no speed of dark because it is a mathematical truth.

He states: that “(d)arkness is everywhere omnipotent. Light appears where there is a source to illuminate it.  Since darkness is everywhere it does not need to move. Therefore we can summarize that (the speed of) darkness . . . is 0.” He refers interested parties to Zero by Charles Seife.

Why isn’t there a speed of dark? Now you know.
