Why Doesn’t Tarzan Have A Beard? – ‘The Why’

Welcome to the latest edition of The Why.

Everywhere you look the media is pushing you telling you who to follow, what to watch and when to watch it.   You’re even sometimes told how to do it all.  Truth is, here at American Live Wire we do a bit of that too.  The big difference is we also tell you why.

You ask the questions.  We provide the answers.

Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard?” you ask? Good! A question that isn’t a one-liner! Your sometimes comedic columnist does have a sense of humor but we like to change things up once in awhile here at “The Why”.

So, why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? Well, the funniest response to the question came from “ChicoG” who posted this on Yahoo: “There are many parasites that live in the jungle that love human facial hair, thus his monkey friends are always chewing the hair off his face to get at these delicate morsels.”

OK, it is not the correct answer to the question: Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? But it is both creative and funny.  There were other interesting responses as well.

Witness a post on a Walt Disney “Fanpop” page by someone known only as “ToastedRabbits”. (Yeah, you don’t want to be around this character’s house at Easter, huh?) At any rate, “TR” pointed out that Disney heroes don’t have facial hair.  While those of us who live beyond the Disney universe and read a book or even comic book or comic strip once in awhile realize Tarzan is a character from classic literature this response was noteworthy nonetheless.

If Tarzan did have facial hair he would probably have lost it in the Disney Sanitation process. Disney was more open to hiring homosexuals before hiring people with facial hair. I guess they forgot that Walt had a mustache. All really cool guys do, of course. (Ahem)

But seriously, why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? The real reason Tarzan does not have a beard or even a mustache is simply because his creator, author Edgar Rice Burroughs, first portrayed him sans facial hair in his novel Tarzan of the Apes (magazine publication 1912, book publication 1914). Subsequent representations–at least twenty-five sequels, three authorized books by other writers, and numerous projects in other media–have generally sought to remain faithful to the original “smooth” or clean-shaven look.

Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? If you are still asking this because you are thinking of Tarzan as a “real” person the answer is simple. He shaves. Tarzan has a very sharp knife. Tarzan may very well have also discovered his father’s razor in the remnants of his parents’ wrecked hut and learned how to shave from their books.

Why doesn’t Tarzan have a beard? Now you know.

You ask the questions.  We provide the answers.
