Why Do We Celebrate Flag Day? – ‘The Why’

Welcome to the newest edition of The Why.

Everywhere you look the media is pushing you telling you who to follow, what to watch and when to watch it.   You’re even sometimes told how to do it all.  Truth is, here at American Live Wire we do a bit of that too.  The big difference is we also tell you why.

You ask the questions.  We provide the answers.

“Why do we celebrate Flag Day?” you ask? Good question. The sad truth is that many Americans have no clue or at best forget about the holiday due perhaps in part to the proximity of The Fourth Of July. (It’s also not a federal holiday either and we’ll discuss later.)

Why do we celebrate Flag Day

A more cynical man night also note that many Americans let their personal politics control their patriotism and they are all too ready to unwrap themselves from the flag if it doesn’t seem politically-correct or if our country makes a mistake. They forget that although our country is not perfect it still is the best in the world which is why people are risking their lives to enter it illegally, mmmkay?

Why do we celebrate Flag Day?  For those who may have forgotten, are too young to have already learned about it or are fresh off the boat or bagged orange truck, let’s review. Flag Day, celebrated on June 14, is a day when Americans commemorate the adoption of the American flag which occurred on June 14, 1777 in accordance with a resolution by the Second Continental Congress.

As previously noted, Flag Day isn’t a federal holiday. Various online sources such as Wikipedia note it’s “at the President’s discretion to officially proclaim the observance.” Pennsylvania became the first (and thus far only) state to celebrate the day as an official state holiday on June 14, 1937. Other states such as New York, Washington and Massachusetts also have special, official celebrations or activities as well.

On a related note to our question Why do we celebrate Flag Day?, it is generally believed that Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross made the first American flag.  While the actual designer is unknown, it was likely designed by Congressman Francis Hopkinson who worked on the United States Seal.

While there is an official meaning behind the red, white and blue of the official US Seal there is no “official” meaning to the colors of the actual flag. In 1782 Secretary of the Continental Congress, Charles Thompson noted: “White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valor and Blue . . . signifies vigilance, perseverance & justice.”

A lesson on flag etiquette and laws related to the flag would fill another column.  Ah but what a better day for you all to investigate and commemorate the American flag on your own?  After all, that’s what Flag Day is all about, boys and girls.

Why do we celebrate Flag Day? Now you know.

Happy Flag Day!
