Boat Sinks off Malaysia Coast, Eight Dead, 28 Missing

Eight Found Dead in Boat Sink off Malaysia Coast

Atleast 8 people have been reported dead and 28 are missing following the sinking of an overcrowded wooden boat, somewhere near the western coast of Malaysia.

Nine boats and a helicopter are now taking part in the rescue operation. While it is not yet clear as to how and why the boat sank, it is presumed that the boat was not seaworthy, and the seas were rough at the time of the travel. Around 100 personnel are thought to be involved in this rescue effort.

It is also presumed that the boat’s capacity was just 50-60 people, while it was carrying around 97 passengers.

Around 60 people have been rescued, of which, some of them swam to the shore as the boat sank on the early Wednesday in the strait of Malacca.

It is believed that the passengers were Indonesians who were heading back home to prepare for their holy month of Ramadhan, and apparently, they did not have the travel documents needed to leave Malaysia.

Many workers are thought to travel undocumented to Malaysia on rickety boats to seek work in this prosperous city. Most of the workers are thought to come from poorer nations like Burma, Indonesia and Bangladesh. They usually sneak into Malaysia for menial works such as construction and plantation, and return home on these old and unsafe boats.

It is also presumed that some survivors may have swum to the shores and gone into hiding.
