Would Wednesday’s match between Argentina and the Netherlands be just as explosive and high scoring?  Actually–it ended up being the exact opposite.

Argentina’s superstar–Lionel Messi–had probably his worst game of the tournament. The Netherlands did a good job of taking him out of the game, but in the process were unable to mount much of an offensive attach themselves. After the two sides played to a stalemate at the end of regulation.

Thirty minutes later the ball had still not found the back of the net forcing a shootout to decided who would face Germany on Saturday. Lionel Messi, Ezequiel Garay, Sergio Aguero and Maxi Rodriguez all made their kicks for Argentina, but Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder were not able to convert for the Netherlands.

With a 4-2 in the shootout Argentina earned the right to return to the Word Cup finals for the first time since 1990–which they lost to Germany. Incidentally, the two faced off in the 1986 finals as well, but that time Argentina won.

The Finals will be on Sunday at 3PM ET at the Maracana. Brazil and the Netherlands will play for third on Saturday at 4 PM ET.
