#4 Akili Smith, Cincinnati Bengals
Top 12 NFL Draft Busts of the Modern Era.
During the 1999 NFL draft, eight eventual pro bowlers would be selected out of the first 11 picks. Akili Smith would not be one of them. As the number 5 overall selection by the Cincinnati Bengals in 1999 Smith would miss “large periods of training camp” which attributed to his poor play that plagued him throughout his career.
While being an athletic quarterback in college, his game never transitioned to the NFL and Akili would never establish himself as a consistent starter. Smith would ride the bench for most of is career before losing out on the back up job to Brett Favre in Green Bay.
